Children’s Society Collection

St Mark’s Church has forwarded to the Children’s Society, a cheque for the sum of £273.04, being the box collections for the year to October 2018, when all the boxes were brought to the Service for the Children’s Society. Maureen would like to thank everyone for their contributions and continuing support for this very worthwhile charity: also to thank all for bringing their boxes in time for the Service, and a special thanks to Shirley and Sue for giving up an afternoon to count and check all of the £273.04, mostly in coins.

Christmas Card

At the back of church is a collective Christmas card for members of St Mark’s to sign. All donations in support of Water Aid.

Calling Christingle Constructors

The humble Christingle; an orange with cloves, red ribbon, sweets and a candle – which symbolises the world, Christ’s blood, God’s creation and Jesus himself. Christingle means ‘Christ Light’ – and will help the children at our Crib service on the 24th December to celebrate Jesus Christ as the “Light of the World”.

However, we need to make them! Rachel Noël will be glad to accept any and all volunteers to the task at the vicarage – from 3pm on Sunday 23rd December.

Carol Singing in Care Homes

St Mark’s are singing carols on Tuesday 18th December at Thornfields  (opposite the petrol station) at 6pm.  Freegrove (Milford Road), at 6:45pm and Belmore Lodge (on the corner of South Street) at 7:30pm. Music will be provided and all are welcome to join us; if you’re driving up, please double up with cars as parking will be limited.  We look forward to seeing you at one or more of the Care Homes – as we know the residents look forward to our visiting them.

Going for Gold?

As you may be aware, St Mark’s were proud to recently be awarded a Bronze Eco Church award from the A Rocha UK’s award scheme for churches in England and Wales, who want to demonstrate that the gospel is good news for God’s earth. We know that with the support of our congregation, we can do a lot better than bronze and in the new year will be looking to see how we can do just that. However, just as earning bronze wasn’t thanks to just one person, we know that to earn better it will take all of us working together.

Do you want to be a key part in our efforts?  We’ll be putting together an ecology working group in the new year – perhaps you may want to join us?

A Good Advent

The Christian publisher, SPCK, have produced some little ‘A Good Advent‘ leaflets, by Bishop of London, Sarah Mullally. We’ve ordered 40 or so, and there may still be some available at the back of church to any who want one.

There’s also an inspiring app  to go along with this publication, ideal for anyone wishing to celebrate the Advent season. This can be downloaded from the Apple or Android app stores: just search for ‘A Good Advent’.

Looking for volunteers

Can you spare some time occasionally or regularly to help out with keeping our church clean. Please have a chat with Eve or Teresa.

Thank you

After 32 years, Shirley Saunders is finishing as our Community Hall Manager. We are making a collection to say a huge thank you to Shirley and John for their tremendous work looking after our hall for many years. There will be a donations box at the back of St Mark’s Church, or please pass your donation to Teresa, our Treasurer.

Fun carols?

Join us on Thursday 20th December* from 7pm for a simple carol service with St Marks! Focusing on classic carols and Christmas hymns, this is a service for those who need a Christmas pick-me-up!

*Note: this is incorrectly advertised as occurring on the 19th in the Parish Magazine.
